In the quiet town of Lancaster, Ohio, 52-year-old Terri Jo Hamm was a woman who largely kept to herself, spending most of her time within the familiar walls of her home on East Chestnut Street. Her life, however, was far from peaceful. Police were called to the residence she shared with her husband of 17 years, Jeffrey "Scott" Hamm, on ten separate occasions in the year leading up to her disappearance. Friends and family described a turbulent and abusive relationship, fueled by Scott's heavy drug use. Terri had expressed a desire to obtain a restraining order against her husband, but had not completed the process. The situation was volatile, with Terri accusing Scott of multiple assaults, and Scott once attempting to frame her for an attack by inflicting injuries on himself. This troubled history set a somber backdrop for the events that would unfold in late January 2015. The last confirmed sighting of Terri was on January 26, 2015. Her husband, Scott, would later provide conflicting accounts of when he last saw her, telling detectives it was January 29, while a neighbor heard it was the 27th. He officially reported her missing on January 31, suggesting to authorities that she had simply "walked out". This explanation was met with skepticism by those who knew Terri, as she was not one for long walks and would not have left without her personal belongings. When police searched the Hamm residence, they found Terri's car, coat, and phone chargers left behind, though her purse, glasses, and cell phone were gone. The search of the home also led to Scott's arrest on drug possession charges. The investigation into Terri's disappearance quickly focused on her husband. In the days following her last sighting, Scott was absent from work and used Terri's debit card for several purchases, an act friends and family stated she would not have willingly allowed. Almost two months after she vanished, Scott Hamm was charged with his wife's aggravated murder, kidnapping, robbery, tampering with evidence, and gross abuse of a corpse. The indictment detailed a brutal crime, alleging that he had strangled her with a belt in their basement before disposing of her body and personal effects. In May of 2016, Scott Hamm pleaded guilty and admitted in court to killing his wife, stating that he had "snapped". He was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison. Despite his confession, Terri Jo Hamm's body has never been recovered. Scott provided varying stories about what he did with her remains and was unable to lead investigators to a location. Multiple searches of the Hamm's home, vehicles, and other properties have yielded no trace of Terri, leaving her family with unanswered questions and a painful lack of closure.
