His disappearance followed an arrest for driving under the influence by the Columbus Police Department on April 6, 2017. After being released from the Bartholomew County Jail the following day, Keeling went on foot to a tow yard to retrieve his recently purchased vehicle. A tow truck driver gave him a ride to a nearby Burger King, where Keeling reportedly charged his phone before disappearing.
Keeling had minimal contact with his family during this time, and they only learned of his arrest through an online search. His family reported him missing on May 27, 2017, nearly two months after his last known sighting. Investigations revealed that his phone last pinged in the Louisville, Kentucky area, but it was disconnected due to non-payment by May 6, 2017, complicating efforts to locate him.
