On May 18, 1988, 33-year-old Jerry Allen Melin was one of three occupants on a Piper PA32 aircraft that departed from Anchorage, Alaska, on a flight destined for McGrath. Also on board the aircraft, which had the tail number N8978, were Christopher Bailey and William Newman. The flight was expected to traverse the rugged and often unforgiving Alaskan wilderness, a common undertaking for experienced pilots and passengers in the vast state. For the family and friends of Jerry Melin, a resident of Wasilla, it was the beginning of a long and painful period of uncertainty, as the plane would never reach its intended destination, marking the last day anyone had contact with him.
