On May 18, 1988, 33-year-old Jerry Allen Melin was one of three occupants on a Piper PA32 aircraft that departed from Anchorage, Alaska, on a flight destined for McGrath. Also on board the aircraft, which had the tail number N8978, were Christopher Bailey and William Newman.
