On a spring day in June of 1992, 24-year-old Matthew Andrews Craig vanished into the turbulent waters of the Big Susitna River in Alaska. He was canoeing with another person about a quarter-mile upstream from the Parks Highway bridge near Talkeetna. As their canoe approached the bridge, it capsized, plunging both individuals into the cold river. While his companion managed to get to safety, Matthew was last seen clinging to the overturned canoe as the current carried him downstream, away from the bridge. He was dressed for the elements in blue pile pants, a pile fleece jacket, blue jeans, and a brown Helly Hansen raincoat with a hood, along with brown Sorrell boots. The last sighting of Matthew placed him about a quarter of a mile downstream from the bridge, still holding onto the canoe. Approximately 20 minutes later, the canoe was spotted drifting alone, roughly a mile and a half further down the river. There was no sign of Matthew. The vast and unforgiving Alaskan wilderness had seemingly swallowed him whole. The Big Susitna River, known for its powerful currents and cold, glacier-fed waters, presents a formidable challenge even to experienced boaters. The river's remote and rugged setting complicates any search and rescue operation. In the wake of his disappearance, an extensive search was launched by the Alaska State Troopers. The effort utilized boats to navigate the river's powerful currents, while airplanes and helicopters scoured the area from above, searching the river and its banks for any sign of the missing man. Despite these thorough efforts, no trace of Matthew Craig was ever found. The case remains a painful mystery for his family and friends. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers of the Alaskan wilderness, where a recreational outing can turn tragic in an instant. The official search was eventually called off, leaving Matthew's fate unknown and his case an open and unresolved missing persons investigation.
