In the summer of 2009, a 22-year-old man named Jacob Alden Larson from Nikiski, Alaska, vanished in the small town of Talkeetna. On July 12th, Jacob, who was also known by the nickname Duce Marshall, was with two other men near the Alaska Railroad bridge that crosses the Talkeetna River. He was seen jumping from the railroad pilings into the river. The afternoon took a tragic turn when he was swept away by the current. His companions tried to keep him in sight by running along the riverbank, but he was quickly carried toward the confluence with the larger Susitna River and disappeared from view. An Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman described the town as having become "unglued" over the weekend, with numerous disturbances and fights breaking out. The chaotic atmosphere was such that troopers who were involved in the initial search for Jacob were repeatedly pulled away to deal with other incidents. The search for Jacob was extensive, with troopers and volunteers scouring the area. The search and rescue teams focused their efforts on a twelve-mile stretch of the Susitna River, but they were unable to find any trace of him. Despite the immediate and thorough search efforts, Jacob was never located. The official circumstances of his disappearance state that he was last seen near the confluence of the Talkeetna and Susitna Rivers after jumping from the railroad bridge. Authorities and volunteers searched for him, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and he is believed to have drowned.
