Sandra Payne, a 33-year-old woman, was last seen on July 4, 1996, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She had attended a barbecue near the Santa Fe Downs with a female friend. Payne was witnessed leaving the gathering between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. in a blue Mazda pickup truck driven by Robert L. Bryant, but she never returned to pick up her own car and has not been seen since.
Investigators later found inconsistencies in Bryant's statements about that night.
He claimed to have left the barbecue alone and visited several places, but those locations did not corroborate his story. Bryant was later convicted of the rape and murder of another woman in 1998, and when he was arrested, police found news clippings about Payne's disappearance in his possession. Despite this, he has not been formally charged in connection with Payne’s case.
Another person of interest is Anthony Klima, who had a known connection to Payne through cocaine trafficking. Payne allegedly owed Klima a significant amount of money, and witnesses claim he had threatened her life. Investigators searched a vehicle associated with Klima and discovered blood, though it remains unclear if this evidence is related to her case.
Payne, a nanny at the time of her disappearance, was known to stay in regular contact with her family, and her disappearance was deemed out of character.
