In the early morning hours of September 26, 2015, 25-year-old Matthew Ray Pugh, a resident of Cornelius, Oregon, vanished under troubling circumstances. The last known contact with Matthew was a distressing phone call to an acquaintance in which he stated that someone was chasing him. This alarming communication marked the beginning of a mystery that has left his family and community searching for answers for nearly a decade. Pugh, described as 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, has not been seen or heard from since that day. His disappearance is considered suspicious by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, which continues to investigate the case. The unsettling nature of Matthew's disappearance was compounded by the discovery of his vehicle later that same day. At approximately 3:00 p.m., a Washington County Sheriff's deputy responded to a call about a 1994 Ford Taurus left unoccupied and running, blocking a driveway in a trailer park on the outskirts of Cornelius. The car was registered to Matthew Pugh. The ignition had been "punched," a modification Matthew had made previously, requiring a screwdriver to start and stop the engine. Inside the vehicle were personal items belonging to both Matthew and another individual, but he was nowhere to be found. His family officially reported him missing the following day after he failed to show up for work or contact any of his loved ones, which was highly out of character for him. In the years prior to his disappearance, Matthew, a welder by trade, had been dedicated to his sobriety after overcoming addiction and was known for his commitment to his work, recovery meetings, and family. In the wake of his disappearance, Matthew's family and friends launched an extensive search effort, distributing thousands of missing person flyers throughout the area. Their efforts were met with a strange and disheartening obstacle when a significant number of the flyers were torn down by unknown individuals, adding to the family's distress and concerns of foul play. Despite extensive searches of the area where his car was found, including a search by the Washington County Search and Rescue team, no significant leads or evidence have been uncovered. The Washington County Sheriff's Office has conducted numerous interviews but has not been able to generate any significant leads. The case remains an active and suspicious missing person investigation. Matthew's family continues to hold out hope, maintaining a social media presence to keep his story in the public eye and appealing for any information that could lead to answers about his whereabouts. They, along with law enforcement, urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
