In the late morning of a fall day in 2018, 65-year-old Bu Quach walked out of the Manahawkin Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Stafford Township, New Jersey, and vanished. Surveillance footage captured him exiting the facility at approximately 11:40 a.m., dressed in a red t-shirt, grey pants, socks, and a yellow wristband. Mr. Quach, who had been a resident at the center since February of that year, was living with several challenging health conditions, including dementia, Parkinson's Disease, diabetes, and PTSD. These conditions, combined with the fact that he spoke very little English, made his disappearance particularly alarming for his family and the community. He was described as being 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 120 pounds, with salt-and-pepper hair that was about chin-length and a partially grown goatee at the time he went missing. He also has distinct tattoos of fading Asian letters on both of his forearms.
The hours and days immediately following Mr. Quach's disappearance were marked by intensive search efforts. The Stafford Township Police Department, along with the New Jersey State Police Missing Person Unit and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, launched a comprehensive search of the area. Believing he was on foot, authorities focused on the vicinity of the nursing home and the Ocean Acres/Barnegat Township border. The search was extensive, involving K-9 units, drones to scan wooded areas, and reverse 911 calls to alert residents. Authorities and concerned citizens scoured the surrounding neighborhoods, checking sheds, yards, and under decks. A potential sighting was reported on the evening he went missing near Treasure Avenue and Lighthouse Drive, which briefly narrowed the search, but ultimately did not lead to his location. His family, deeply concerned, organized their own search parties, with his sons taking an active role in the efforts and appealing to the public for any information that might bring their father home.
As days turned into weeks and then months, the large-scale organized searches transitioned to a limited continuance basis, to be reactivated if new leads emerged. Community members, however, continued to look for Mr. Quach, with a dedicated Facebook group serving as a hub for information and support. Despite these persistent efforts from law enforcement, family, and compassionate citizens, there have been no significant developments or credible sightings of Bu Quach since the initial days of his disappearance. His family has expressed their gratitude for the community's support while also pursuing legal action against the nursing facility, hoping to prevent similar incidents from happening to others. The case officially remains open, but as the years have passed without any new information, it has grown cold.
