Daniel Gilchrist, age 19, was last seen on December 18, 2018, at his father’s home in Moss Beach, California. A Purdue University freshman, Daniel was visiting home for the holidays. That evening, around 8:00 p.m., he informed his father he was heading out to visit a friend in nearby Pacifica. However, his friend wasn’t even in town, and Daniel never arrived at her house. His last known phone activity occurred early the next morning, around 1:40 a.m., near his father's driveway.
His car was left behind, with the keys placed on the vehicle's antenna.
Daniel had been struggling emotionally, especially after the death of his mother from ovarian cancer earlier that year. His family had noticed signs of distress, and his father believed he may have been suicidal. Before his disappearance, Daniel had searched for "Devil's Slide" on his computer, a notorious cliffside area along the California coast. His father found a note in which Daniel expressed a desire to disconnect from society and become a vagabond.
