In the autumn of 2013, 53-year-old James Richard Larabee, known to his friends and family as Rick, traveled to his hometown of Davis, Oklahoma. A divorced father of five who was living in Denton, Texas, he often returned to the small town for his high school's annual alumni banquet to reconnect with old friends. He was last seen in Davis on September 28, 2013, the day of his class reunion. A few days later, on October 3, his sister received a text message from him stating he was going to northwest Oklahoma for a nine-day trip. This was the last time any of his family ever heard from him. The planned trip was considered unusual, particularly because his mother was gravely ill with Stage 4 cancer at the time. She passed away just a few days after his last communication. The days turned into weeks, and the weeks into years without any word from Rick. A heartbreaking miscommunication among his loved ones led to a significant delay in officially reporting him missing. His sister believed his adult children had filed a report shortly after he vanished, and they thought she had done so. It wasn't until 2018 that his sister discovered no report had been made and immediately contacted the Davis Police Department. The subsequent investigation uncovered unsettling details from the weeks leading up to his disappearance. It was learned that Rick had quit his job and had cashed out his 401(k) retirement savings just before attending the class reunion. A friend also came forward, stating that Rick had made comments about wanting to "just disappear" or "go up in the woods and kill himself." Further investigation revealed that Rick's vehicle, a 2007 Honda Civic, had been sold in Georgia in April 2015, nearly two years after he was last heard from. Authorities were able to contact the person who purchased the car, who confirmed they bought it from an individual in Georgia, but that person was not James Larabee. Additionally, his Texas driver's license expired in 2016 and was never renewed. Despite these leads, the trail went cold. With no evidence of foul play, the circumstances surrounding James Larabee's disappearance remain a mystery. The delayed reporting created significant challenges for investigators, as crucial time was lost in the initial stages of the search. The case is a somber collection of puzzling events: a man saying goodbye to his past at a class reunion, a final, cryptic text message, and the liquidation of his life's savings. His whereabouts remain unknown, and his case is still considered an unsolved missing person's case.
