In the early hours of March 4, 2020, in La Mesa, California, an unresponsive man was discovered by bystanders in a parking lot at the intersection of Allison and Date Street. The man, later identified as 53-year-old Steven Robert Nichols, was found lying on the ground next to a cinder block wall K-rail. Nichols was known to be a frequent transient in the La Mesa area. The situation immediately prompted bystanders to flag down nearby police officers to assess the scene.
