On the morning of June 4, 2022, police officers in Columbia, Missouri, were dispatched to a residence on Memorial Court following a 911 call reporting an unresponsive individual. Upon arrival at the home, authorities discovered the body of 55-year-old Daniel Knight, a longtime legal professional and the serving Boone County Prosecutor. He was found deceased inside his residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The discovery prompted an immediate response from local law enforcement and the county medical examiner’s office to secure the scene and determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Investigators from the Columbia Police Department initiated an inquiry into the incident, processing the scene for evidence and interviewing individuals who may have had contact with Knight prior to his passing. Law enforcement officials, including the police chief, addressed the public shortly after the discovery to provide preliminary information. From the onset of the investigation, authorities indicated that there were no signs of a struggle or forced entry at the home. Following a forensic examination and autopsy, the medical examiner’s office ruled the death a suicide, confirming that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
Given the determination that no foul play was involved in the death, there were no suspects sought in connection with the case. Consequently, no arrests were made, and no criminal charges were filed. The investigation was closed with the finding that the death was a non-criminal act, bringing an end to the official inquiry into the sudden passing of the county's top prosecutor.
