In the early morning hours of December 11, 2022, the life of 22-year-old Robert G. Butler Jr. was tragically cut short in Independence, Missouri. A graduate of Central High School, Robert had earned an associate's degree in Engineering from Lincoln University and was working as a Pre-K teacher, all while running his own clothing line. He was a father to a young daughter.
On that particular night, Robert was at a small party in an apartment in the 4600 block of Brentwood Avenue.
As the gathering wound down and most guests had departed, an 18-year-old man named Vyshon D. Wilson allegedly shot Robert multiple times 'for no reason' with an AR-style firearm. The sudden violence left Robert collapsed in the entryway of the apartment.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene by jumping off a back deck, leaving behind a crucial piece of evidence: his cell phone. Witnesses at the party identified the shooter to the police, and cell phone photos from the event further implicated him. An arrest warrant was issued for Vyshon D. Wilson just two days after the incident, and he was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. Authorities sought public assistance in locating him, expressing concern that he might be receiving help from family or friends to evade capture.
