A 16-year-old male, Jaylen Miles, was tragically found deceased on December 29, 2022, in the backyard of a vacant house in the Glasgow Village neighborhood of St. Louis County, just a short distance from his own home. Responding to a call around 3:37 PM, police discovered the young man suffering from at least one gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death, which is being investigated as a homicide, occurred just days before what would have been his 17th birthday.
Despite a troubled past that included a previous charge as an adult for shooting at a police officer in 2020, those who knew Jaylen saw a significant and positive transformation in him. After spending two years in juvenile detention, his mother, Regina Jones, noted that he had matured, often speaking about the Bible verses he was studying and making plans for his future upon release. This change was supported by Mike Milton, the executive director of the nonprofit Freedom Community Center, who worked with Jaylen's attorney to secure his release on bond in August 2022, offering him a second chance.
In the months leading up to his death, Jaylen appeared to be embracing this new opportunity. He was diligent about his weekly check-ins with his mentor, joined his school's football team, and became a member of a church basketball team alongside his younger brother. His basketball coach, Rodney Jones, remembered him as respectful and a good teammate. Jaylen also found support and community by participating in the St. Louis City Young Life, a Christian-based youth ministry group. The organization's area director, Darren Young, remarked on Jaylen's impact, stating that he 'changed all of our hearts and minds' and underscored the profound importance of second chances. Tragically, Jaylen's father had also been a victim of gun violence in 2019.
The St. Louis County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons detectives are leading the ongoing investigation into Jaylen's death. Authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the homicide.
