Stephen Skirpan, a 29-year-old resident of Lake County, Indiana, was tragically murdered on December 4, 1977. On that fateful day, James Brewer and an accomplice, Brooks, arrived at the Skirpan residence under the pretense of being officers investigating a traffic accident. They claimed to have a search warrant, but when Stephen Skirpan asked to see it, Brewer announced it was a hold-up. Both men drew handguns, and in the ensuing chaos, Stephen Skirpan was fatally shot.
