On the afternoon of September 2, 2009, police in Bedford, Indiana, responded to a violent scene at the Ridgewood Apartment Complex on the 3300 block of Michael Avenue. Officers arrived to find 35-year-old Jason Lee Joy lying face down in the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Joy, a white male from Lawrence County, had been working on a vehicle outside the complex when the attack occurred. Despite the immediate response of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly secured the area and began interviewing witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the homicide. A nearby resident reported hearing gunshots and looking out a window to see a man collapse to the ground. The witness described a chilling scene in which a woman approached the fallen victim and fired approximately five additional rounds into his body before the arrival of law enforcement. The weapon used in the attack was identified as a 9mm handgun.
Authorities detained a woman at the scene identified as 38-year-old Susan Renee May of Hendricks County. According to police reports, May and Joy had previously been in a relationship and were both experiencing homelessness at the time, staying temporarily at a friend's apartment within the complex. Following questioning, May was arrested and taken into custody in connection with Joy’s death. The investigation indicated that the shooting was the culmination of a domestic dispute between the two individuals.
