On a Sunday evening in Lawrence, Indiana, an argument inside Don Marco's Restaurant set the stage for a tragic end to the life of 34-year-old Germán Tepale Alonso. The male victim was at the establishment on North Post Road with his brother and a friend on December 15, 2024, when they became engaged in a dispute with another group of patrons.
The disagreement spilled out into the parking lot, escalating from a verbal altercation to a physical fight.
At some point during the confrontation, one of the individuals from the other group allegedly followed Mr. Alonso and his companions out of the restaurant and opened fire. A Lawrence Police Department officer who was on patrol nearby heard the gunshots around 8:30 p.m. and arrived at the scene to find people fleeing and Mr. Alonso suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
As the chaos unfolded, witnesses pointed out a vehicle that was attempting to leave the scene. The officer conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver, a 42-year-old man initially identified as Eliezer Suarez after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement assisted in confirming his identity. Inside the vehicle, investigators discovered a handgun with a round in the chamber that matched the cartridges found at the location of the shooting.
Suarez claimed that several men had surrounded him, pushed him to the ground, and hit him in the head before he fired two shots. While security footage from the restaurant captured the fight, it did not show the shooting itself, leaving the moments leading up to the fatal shot unclear. Following an investigation, Eliezer Suarez was formally charged with murder on December 23. He had his initial court hearing on the same day, with further proceedings scheduled.
