In a tragic turn of events on the night of February 3, 2014, Ernest Earl Jasper, a 46-year-old male resident of Franklin, Indiana, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded when Mr. Jasper, a man known for his willingness to help others, responded to a neighbor's plea for assistance during a violent domestic dispute. His neighbor's ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Andrew J. Parish, had arrived at the home armed with a handgun and an AK-47.

Jasper, accompanied by his two sons, went to the neighbor's residence to intervene in the escalating altercation between Parish and his ex-girlfriend, Maria Davis. The situation quickly devolved into violence as Parish opened fire, striking multiple people. Ernest Jasper was shot in the face and succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Indianapolis. Another individual, 19-year-old Sara Davidson, who was a friend of Davis, was also killed in the shooting. Two other people were wounded during the incident.
Following the deadly assault, Andrew J. Parish fled the scene in his vehicle. As law enforcement officers closed in on his location in a rural area a few miles away, Parish took his own life with the AK-47. Investigators later found a suicide note, though it did not indicate an intention to harm others.
