In the early evening of January 25, 2020, the life of 18-year-old Donovan Isaiah Burdine was cut short in Franklin, Indiana. The male teenager was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the front yard of a residence in the 100 block of Hurricane Street, near the Boys & Girls Club. Despite the efforts of first responders who arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m., Burdine was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly painted a picture of a drug deal that had taken a
violent turn. What was supposed to be a transaction for marijuana escalated into a robbery and ultimately a homicide. Initially, investigators believed Burdine was the victim of a robbery, but as they delved deeper into the case, a different narrative emerged. It was revealed that Burdine had attempted to rob the man who would ultimately take his life. During an altercation that began inside a nearby house and spilled out into the yard, Burdine reportedly drew a gun and fired at Emilio Garcia.
In the ensuing chaos, Garcia, then 20 years old, returned fire, striking Burdine multiple times. After Burdine was down, Garcia took Burdine's own gun and shot him twice in the back of the head. An autopsy would later confirm that these two shots were the cause of death and that Burdine had been shot a total of 12 times. The investigation was aided by surveillance footage that captured a red Dodge Dart leaving the scene, leading police to the driver, 21-year-old Roger Miller. Miller's cooperation was instrumental in identifying Garcia as the shooter.
Within a day of the fatal shooting, both Emilio Garcia and Roger Miller were in custody. Garcia faced serious charges, including murder and robbery, while Miller was charged with assisting a criminal. As the legal process unfolded, the complexities of the case, particularly the fact that Garcia was responding to an armed robbery attempt by Burdine, led to a change in the charges. In March 2021, Emilio Garcia pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Roger Miller was released after posting bond on the misdemeanor charge.
