In the quiet community of Laconia, Indiana, a tragedy unfolded that left a family shattered and a community in mourning. On April 25, 2015, 35-year-old Leah Gwin, a female resident, lost her life in a violent act that took place within the supposed safety of her own home. The events of that day were set in motion by her husband, 38-year-old Kenneth Gwin, in what authorities would later rule a murder-suicide.
The couple's four children, all under the age of 12, were present in the house on Otterbein Road at the time of the incident.
The horror of the situation became apparent when the children fled their home and ran to a neighbor for help, who then promptly called 911. When officers from the Harrison County Sheriff's Department arrived, they were met with a grim scene. Inside the residence, they discovered the bodies of both Leah and Kenneth Gwin. The investigation concluded that Kenneth had fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Due to the uncertainty of the situation upon initial arrival, a SWAT team was dispatched to the scene.
Prior to the fatal incident, law enforcement had been called to the Gwin's residence on multiple occasions for verbal domestic disturbances. In fact, there had been recent instances where Leah and her children were temporarily removed from the home due to these altercations, though there had been no prior signs of physical violence. The investigation determined that Kenneth Gwin acted alone, and as a result, no further suspects were sought, and no arrests were made. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the community rallied to support the four orphaned children, who were placed in the care of family members.
