In a quiet, rural setting in Laconia, Indiana, a violent altercation shattered the peace on a Friday evening, leaving two elderly residents dead and another injured in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. Virginia Y. Scofield, an 82-year-old woman, was tragically killed in the incident. The event unfolded just after 6:00 p.m. on Mosquito Creek Road, when a verbal argument escalated to gunfire.
The dispute reportedly began between 84-year-old Donald Ray Weaver and
56-year-old Marian Young, who was Scofield's son. As the argument intensified, Young stepped outside the residence. Weaver followed him and proceeded to shoot him in the arm. Despite his injury, Young managed to flee to a neighbor's house to call for help.
In the moments that followed Young's escape, investigators believe Weaver turned his aggression towards Virginia Scofield. He shot and killed the 82-year-old woman outside the residence. Shortly after, Weaver turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. When Harrison County officers and Indiana State Police troopers arrived at the scene, they discovered the bodies of both Scofield and Weaver.
Marian Young was transported to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The Indiana State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation. Autopsies were scheduled to be performed to confirm the causes of death. The incident has left the small community in shock, mourning the loss of a long-time resident in a sudden and violent manner.
