In the summer of 2016, a vibrant life was tragically cut short in Indianapolis. On the night of Sunday, August 7, 26-year-old Christopher S. Joseph, known to his loved ones as 'C.J.', was attending a large street gathering near the intersection of 25th and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. The atmosphere, filled with a crowd estimated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 people, turned chaotic when gunfire erupted around 10:45 p.m.
In the ensuing violence, Christopher was fatally wounded, and two other individuals sustained minor injuries.
Christopher was a beloved member of his community. He was a 2008 graduate of North Central High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Central State University in 2012. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church North Indianapolis. Described as having an infectious smile and a big heart, he was known for his love of God, family, friends, and soccer. Even in his death, he continued to give to others as an organ donor. He left behind a loving family, including his parents, grandparents, and his fiancée.
In the wake of the shooting, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into Christopher's death. However, the case quickly grew cold. Despite the large number of potential witnesses present at the scene, investigators received no credible leads that could point them toward a suspect or suspects. The lack of cooperation from those with information proved to be a significant hurdle in the pursuit of justice for Christopher and his family.
Years have passed since that fatal night, and the case remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. In an effort to generate new leads, Christopher's family and friends started a 'Justice 4 Christopher 'CJ' Joseph' GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a reward for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for his murder. The family continues to hold out hope that someone will come forward with the information needed to bring closure and see justice served for Christopher's untimely death.
