In the early morning hours of June 21, 2018, the life of 21-year-old Derricko Rogers, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire in Gary, Indiana. The fatal incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. inside an apartment building located in the 200 block of East Ridge Road in the city's Glen Park section. Rogers, a resident of Gary, was not a resident of the apartment where the shooting took place.
Police were initially called to the scene where they discovered a 27-year-old man from Merrillville
outside the building with injuries. This individual alerted the officers to the possibility of another victim still inside. Upon entering the apartment, authorities found Derricko Rogers, who had been fatally wounded. The Lake County coroner's office later pronounced him dead at the scene, officially ruling his death a homicide.
Investigators from the Lake County/Metro Homicide Unit took over the case, noting that a back security door of the three-story apartment building was found ajar, suggesting a possible forced entry or a hasty exit. The other man who was shot during the incident was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Derricko Rogers. The investigation has been hampered by a lack of witnesses and concrete evidence, making it difficult for authorities to identify any suspects or determine a clear motive for the shooting. The case remains open and unsolved, leaving a community in mourning and a family without answers.
