On November 1, 2020, a tragic series of events unfolded in Indianapolis, leading to the death of 43-year-old Mia Harrison. The day took a violent turn when police were called to a gas station on East 42nd Street where they discovered a man who had been shot in the chest. The injured man was able to inform the officers that his own cousin was the one who had shot him and expressed grave concern that his mother, Mia Harrison, could also be in danger.

information, law enforcement proceeded to Harrison's home. As they arrived, the situation escalated when they heard the sound of gunfire coming from inside the residence. This prompted the involvement of a SWAT team to handle the volatile and dangerous scene. Upon making entry into the home, they made a grim discovery. Mia Harrison was found deceased, having been fatally shot. Alongside her, the family's dog had also been killed.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified the suspect as Steven Boykin, who was Harrison's nephew and the cousin of the man he had shot earlier. Investigators were able to connect Boykin to the crimes through ballistic evidence, matching the shell casings found at the scene to a gun that was in his possession when he was apprehended.
In April 2023, Steven Boykin was convicted for his role in the violent events of that day. A jury found him guilty of the murder of his aunt, Mia Harrison, the attempted murder of his cousin, and robbery. Additionally, he was convicted for the killing of the family's dog. Following his conviction, Boykin's sentencing was scheduled for May 17 of the same year.
