On January 22, 2021, law enforcement officers from the Decatur Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office converged on a residence in rural Adams County, Indiana, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. The subject of their inquiry was Todd A. Elzey Jr., a 21-year-old White male from Decatur, whom authorities had identified as a person of interest regarding an alleged crime. Detectives approached the home with the intention of questioning him about his potential involvement in the unspecified offenses under review.
As investigators knocked on the door to initiate contact, the situation escalated rapidly when they heard what sounded like a single gunshot originating from inside the residence. Prioritizing safety, the detectives immediately retreated to cover and called for reinforcements. The Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team was summoned to the scene to manage the barricaded situation and ensure a secure entry into the home.
After obtaining a search warrant, the tactical unit breached the residence to conduct a search. Inside, they discovered Elzey deceased. An examination of the scene led investigators to conclude that he had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Adams County Coroner later confirmed his identity and the manner of death. Because the sole person of interest in the investigation died at the scene, there were no subsequent arrests, trials, or convictions related to the case.
