Trooper Cory Raymond Elson, a 26-year-old officer with the Indiana State Police, tragically lost his life on April 3, 1999, during a routine traffic stop in Decatur, Indiana. Elson, who had only been with the force for three months, was conducting a traffic stop on U.S. 27 when the suspect, Mark L. Lichtenberger, opened fire with a fully automatic AK-47.
