On a late summer evening in Fremont, Indiana, the life of 18-year-old Caden David Hulliberger was tragically cut short. On August 31, 2021, emergency services responded to a 911 call from a residence on Baum Street, where they found Hulliberger deceased from a gunshot wound. The initial investigation, led by the Indiana State Police, pointed to what was at first considered a possible accidental shooting involving a shotgun.
Present at the scene was another 18-year-old, Octavian A.
Lensky, who was described as a friend of Hulliberger. The two had reportedly been playing video games and were preparing to go get a pizza when the incident occurred. While they were handling a 12-gauge shotgun inside the home, the weapon discharged, striking Hulliberger at an intermediate range and causing his fatal injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.
Following a three-month investigation into the shooting, the Steuben County Sheriff's Department arrested Octavian A. Lensky in December 2021. He was taken into custody at his place of employment without incident. Initially, Lensky was charged with reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Lensky, then 19, reached a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the charge of reckless homicide. In exchange for his plea, additional charges of involuntary manslaughter, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia were dropped. A Steuben County Superior Court judge sentenced Octavian A. Lensky to the maximum sentence of six years in the Indiana Department of Corrections for his role in the death of Caden Hulliberger.
