In the autumn of 2021, a day of foraging in the woods of Southern Indiana turned fatal for Michael Walker, a 55-year-old White/Caucasian male from Austin. On the afternoon of Friday, October 29, 2021, Walker was in a wooded area behind a home on Peacock Hollow Road, east of Salem, with two other men and two dogs. The group was hunting for ginseng, a valuable root sought for its use in herbal supplements.
The tranquility of their search was shattered when a gunshot echoed through the
trees. Responding to a 911 call about a person being shot, officers from the Washington County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene to find Michael Walker deceased. An autopsy would later confirm that he had died from a single gunshot wound.
The investigation into Walker's death, led by Indiana State Police detectives from the Sellersburg post, quickly focused on a nearby resident. Krystal N. Granger, a 35-year-old woman, was identified as the individual who had fired a weapon. Investigators determined that Granger had fired at least one shot in the direction of Walker and the two dogs that were with his party.
Initially, Granger was arrested on a charge of false informing. However, as the investigation progressed and the autopsy results became available, the charges against her were escalated. Krystal N. Granger was subsequently charged with reckless homicide in connection with the death of Michael Walker. She was taken into custody and held at the Washington County Jail to await further legal proceedings.
