In the early morning hours of November 6, 2021, a tragedy unfolded in a parking lot in the 5400 block of Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis. There, 31-year-old James Lewis Markues Smith, a Black male, was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. A funeral service was held for him on November 20, 2021, at the Williams and Bluitt Funeral Home Peoples' Chapel, where family and friends gathered to mourn their loss.
As of early 2025, no arrests have been publicly announced, and no suspects have been identified in connection with his death. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek answers in the unsolved case.
On October 17, 2020, within the walls of the Marion County Jail, another life was cut short. James Smith, a 51-year-old male inmate from Sullivan County, was found unresponsive in the early morning. Despite the efforts of medics who were called to the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m. Authorities believe his death was the result of a stabbing by a fellow inmate, with an improvised weapon being used in the fatal assault. Smith had been incarcerated since August 22, 2020, on two felony charges of intimidation after allegedly threatening to kill his mother upon his release from the Indiana Department of Corrections. Prior to his death, he had been moved to different housing locations within the jail due to his use of racially-charged language towards another inmate and was in a single cell at the time of the incident. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's homicide office was called to investigate the death.
