In the early morning hours of December 19, 2021, the life of 28-year-old Derek Johnson of Evansville, Indiana, was tragically cut short. Johnson, a male who enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a father, was found deceased in his home alongside his partner, 27-year-old Samantha Robbins. The Vanderburgh County Coroner later confirmed that both Johnson and Robbins died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The grim discovery was made after a three-year-old child from the residence went to a neighbor's house around 3 a.m. and reported that his mother had been shot. Other children were also present in the home at the time of the incident but were unharmed.
The investigation swiftly led police to a suspect, Arthur Lee Jones IV, who was 29 at the time. Jones, who had been a childhood friend of Johnson's and was referred to as 'Uncle Art' by one of the children, was soon arrested. Prosecutors presented evidence that Jones' motive was robbery, stating that he had shot the couple with the intent to steal from them. The items taken were reported to be a mere $400 and some costume jewelry. One of the children in the home identified 'Uncle Art' as the perpetrator to law enforcement.
In November 2023, following a week-long and often tumultuous trial, a jury found Arthur Lee Jones IV guilty of the murders of Derek Johnson and Samantha Robbins. During the trial, both Jones and his mother had outbursts in the courtroom. On December 15, 2023, Jones was sentenced to 145 years in prison for the double homicide. The sentence consisted of 65 years for each murder conviction, with an additional 15 years due to his status as a habitual offender. It was revealed that at the time of the murders, Jones had been on parole for a violent crime for only 65 days.
