In a quiet Fortville neighborhood, a family disturbance escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 23-year-old Brandon Perry. The young man died on Sunday, February 6, 2022, from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in an incident that occurred the previous day. The altercation, which led to the fatal shooting, appeared to stem from a family disagreement.
The conflict reportedly began after a shouting match between Perry and John Patrick Talboo, 48, who was dating Perry's aunt.
Following the argument, Talboo went inside the residence he shared with the aunt, retrieved a. 38 revolver, and went back outside. He and Perry walked towards each other, at which point Talboo fired at him. According to Talboo's account, Perry then rushed him, and he fired again. He admitted he may have fired a third time after Perry jumped on top of him. Perry was shot three times in total—twice in the head and once in the chest. He was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
John Patrick Talboo was arrested at the scene and was later charged with murder. He told investigators that he had lost his temper and that 'the situation got out of control.' Initially held on a 72-hour hold, Talboo was formally charged, with the potential of facing up to 65 years in prison.
In a later development, Talboo entered into a plea agreement. In February 2023, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter as well as a firearm sentencing enhancement. As a result of the plea deal, his jury trial was canceled. In May 2023, a judge sentenced Talboo to a 35-year prison term for his role in the death of Brandon Perry. During the sentencing, Talboo expressed deep regret for his actions, stating, 'If I could go back and change my actions that day, I would.'
