Lorin M. Yelle, a 43-year-old male, tragically lost his life on April 4, 2022, in a senseless act of violence at a gas station in New Albany, Indiana. He was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a domestic dispute that escalated to a double homicide. That day, Cherok Ameer Douglass fatally shot his 38-year-old wife, Brandee Kay Douglass, before turning his weapon on Yelle, who was simply a customer at the gas station walking to his vehicle.
There was no known connection between Yelle and the Douglasses.
The violence did not end at the gas station. Following the murders, Cherok Douglass fled the scene, leading to a police chase. He subsequently took a restaurant owner hostage. The hostage was injured when she fell from his vehicle during the pursuit. Law enforcement was eventually able to apprehend Douglass. Court documents later revealed that Douglass was under the influence of heroin and methamphetamine on the day of the killings.
Cherok Ameer Douglass was arrested and faced multiple charges for his crimes. In August 2023, a jury found him guilty of two counts of murder for the deaths of his wife and Lorin M. Yelle. He was also convicted on one count of attempted murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. During his sentencing, the judge referred to his actions as 'the worst of the worst.' Douglass offered an apology to the families of his victims but claimed to have no memory of the events of that night and stated his intention to appeal the verdict. He received a sentence of 240 years in prison for his horrific actions.
