In the spring of 2022, a violent encounter in an Evansville, Indiana apartment building tragically cut short the life of 43-year-old Vito Acardo Allen. On the evening of April 17th, what began as a physical confrontation between Allen and another man, 50-year-old Thomas R. James, escalated into a fatal exchange of gunfire.
When law enforcement arrived at the West Mill Road apartment complex, they found a grim scene. Allen was pronounced dead at the location.
James, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office later officially identified both men. In the ensuing investigation, the Evansville Police Department determined that the two men had assaulted each other leading to the deadly shootout. Authorities concluded that the altercation was an isolated incident between Allen and James and that they were not searching for any other suspects in connection with the deaths. As a result, no arrests were made in the case. The incident contributed to what was noted as a particularly violent year for the city of Evansville.
