On October 27, 1906, in Coeburn, Virginia, Policeman Roscoe Flanary was on duty at a political gathering held in anticipation of an upcoming election. During the event, an attendee named C.A. Edwards attempted to shoot John Litz, with whom he had a dispute. Edwards' shot missed Litz and instead struck Policeman Flanary in the chest. Flanary's condition deteriorated over the following days, leading to his death on November 1, 1906.
