In the town of Coeburn, Virginia, a tragic event unfolded that cut short the life of a young state trooper. Robert Fulton Giles, a 24-year-old male, was attempting to quell a disturbance when his life was violently taken. While on duty, he and another police officer intervened in a fight between two men outside a local cafe on U.S. 58-A. The situation escalated into a struggle, a fateful moment that would have dire consequences.
During the physical altercation, Trooper Giles' service
weapon became dislodged from its holster. In a swift and shocking turn of events, one of the men involved in the initial fight seized the opportunity and the firearm. He then shot Trooper Giles with his own weapon. The gravity of his injuries was immediately apparent, and he was rushed to Park Avenue Hospital in the nearby city of Norton for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Trooper Giles succumbed to his injuries and died the following day. His tour of duty, which had spanned three years, came to an abrupt and sorrowful end.
