Night Watchman Thomas Edward Drawbond, aged 51, tragically lost his life on March 19, 1909, while patrolling the Norfolk and Western Railroad tracks near Vesuvius, Virginia. Drawbond was ambushed and shot from behind with a shotgun while he was on foot, checking the railroad bridges along the South River in an area known as Cedar Ridge Cut.
