Samuel Albert Brown III, born on June 12, 1867, in Callaghan, Alleghany County, Virginia, served as a Deputy Sheriff in Covington, Virginia. On July 8, 1927, at the age of 60, he was tragically killed in the line of duty. Deputy Brown was attempting to arrest a suspected thief alongside the sheriff when the incident occurred.
