Death by Force

Sheriff Edwin Blair Butler of Alleghany County, Virginia, met a tragic end on August 12, 1922, following a gunshot wound sustained while performing his duties. On August 9, 1922, Sheriff Butler, along with two other officers, was serving a search warrant on a suspected moonshine operation. During this operation, he was shot and subsequently taken to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Hospital in Clifton Forge. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
