Deputy Sheriff George C. Williams Sr., aged 36, tragically lost his life on January 16, 1928, in Chatham, Virginia. Deputy Williams was off duty and working on his tobacco farm when he noticed a man emerging from the nearby woods. This man was wanted for several recent burglaries in the area. Deputy Williams approached the suspect and placed him under arrest. However, as he began to search the man, the suspect produced a revolver and shot Deputy Williams once.
