Constable William M. "Will" Coward, aged 44, tragically lost his life on May 28, 1939, in Chatham, Virginia. He was shot and killed with his own service weapon while attempting to arrest a man who was causing a disturbance at a church on Route 57, near Chatham. During the arrest, two other men approached Constable Coward from behind. One of the men seized Coward's revolver from its holster and handed it to the second man, who then shot Coward in the back.
