In a tragic turn of events, the life of a dedicated public servant, James Madison Beard, was cut short within the very walls of the institution he had sworn to protect. At 67 years old, the male Chief of Police was a veteran of the Buena Vista Police Department, having served his community for 37 years. His long and respected career came to a violent end inside the Buena Vista courthouse and jail located at 2110 Magnolia Avenue.
The fatal encounter began when a prisoner, who had been transferred from Pennsylvania under the Chief's watch, made a sudden and aggressive move. The inmate rushed Chief Beard, managing to overpower him and gain control of his service weapon. With the Chief's own handgun now in his possession, the prisoner fired two shots, mortally wounding the seasoned officer.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, another officer on the scene responded swiftly, firing at the suspect and striking him in the leg. The injury sustained by the assailant was severe enough to necessitate the amputation of his leg. The suspect was taken into custody following the incident. Chief Beard was survived by his wife and four children, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and a community to mourn his loss.
