James Madison Beard, who was 68 years old at the time of his death on October 14, 1933, was the Chief of Police in Buena Vista, Virginia. His death was a tragic result of gunfire during the line of duty. Chief Beard was transporting a prisoner from Pennsylvania to Buena Vista when the incident occurred. The prisoner managed to overpower Chief Beard, seize his weapon, and fatally shoot him twice inside the Buena Vista courthouse and jail at 2110 Magnolia Avenue.
