James Madison Beard, who was 68 years old at the time of his death on October 14, 1933, was the Chief of Police in Buena Vista, Virginia. His death was a tragic result of gunfire during the line of duty. Chief Beard was transporting a prisoner from Pennsylvania to Buena Vista when the incident occurred.
