In the spring of 1970, a violent episode cut short the life of 20-year-old Lewis T. Hartless in Tysons Corner, Virginia. On March 26, he and another young man, 19-year-old Richard Newland, were targeted in a deadly dispute between rival motorcycle gangs.
The events leading to their deaths began with a physical altercation between Newland and a member of the Pagan motorcycle gang. After Newland won the fight, the Pagans sought revenge.
In a retaliatory act, members of the gang abducted both Hartless and Newland.
The two men were taken to an apartment in Arlington, where they were held against their will and ultimately killed. Hartless died from gun violence in what was described as a brutal crime. The incident highlighted the violent culture associated with motorcycle gangs in the area during that era.
In the aftermath of the killings, law enforcement launched an extensive investigation into the actions of the Pagan motorcycle gang. This led to arrests and legal proceedings against those believed to be responsible. The case proved to be complex, as the secretive and tight-knit nature of the gang presented significant challenges for investigators.
