In the winter of 1988, a tragedy unfolded at the Atlantic Shores Christian Academy in Virginia Beach, Virginia, forever altering the lives of many. On December 16th, a 15-year-old student named Nicholas Elliott entered the school armed with a Cobray M-11 pistol. Inside, he opened fire, tragically cutting short the life of teacher Karen Farley. Another teacher was also wounded in the assault.
The rampage came to an end when the firearm jammed, preventing further bloodshed as other students and teachers bravely intervened to subdue him. Karen Farley died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The aftermath of the shooting saw the young perpetrator, Nicholas Elliott, facing the full weight of the justice system. He was charged with first-degree murder, malicious assault, attempted murder, and multiple firearms offenses. Elliott was subsequently convicted for the murder of Karen Farley and received a sentence of life in prison plus 114 years.
In a separate legal battle, Karen Farley's husband, William Farley, took action against the gun store that sold the weapon used in the school shooting. The lawsuit alleged that a clerk at Guns Unlimited should have recognized that the gun was being purchased for the underage Nicholas Elliott through a 'straw purchase' by an older relative. In a landmark verdict, a Virginia Beach jury found the Isle of Wight gun store liable and ordered them to pay $100,000 to Karen Farley's family. The jury determined that the shooting was a foreseeable consequence of the illegal gun sale. The individual who purchased the gun for Elliott served 15 months in prison for his role in providing the minor with the weapon.
