On a tragic day in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, 72-year-old taxi driver Hugh E. Morrison, a male also known as Huie Morrison, was killed on January 29, 1993, becoming an unfortunate victim in a brutal crime spree. His death was part of a violent chain of events carried out by Ronald Lee Fitzgerald.
The day of terror began when Fitzgerald broke into a residence in Chatham, where he committed other violent crimes before fatally shooting the homeowner, Coy M. White.
Later that same day, Fitzgerald's path crossed with Morrison. While Morrison was working, Fitzgerald robbed and murdered him. The string of violent acts continued until Fitzgerald was apprehended by law enforcement.
In 1994, a Pittsylvania County jury found Ronald Lee Fitzgerald guilty of multiple charges, including the capital murders of both Hugh Morrison and Coy White. The jury recommended the death penalty for the murders, citing the heinous nature of the crimes and Fitzgerald's potential for future violence. Following his conviction, Fitzgerald's appeals were exhausted, and he was executed on October 21, 1998. Before his execution, Fitzgerald issued a final statement, expressing remorse for the killings and asking for forgiveness from the families of his victims.
