Leona Swafford, an 83-year-old woman, had just returned to her Arlington, Texas home on the morning of June 4, 2013, when her life was tragically cut short in a brutal and senseless act of violence. As she pulled her 2010 Lincoln MKZ into her driveway in the 400 block of Sussex Drive, a man suddenly appeared and attacked her. A neighbor witnessed the assailant, who was described as a Black male in his late 20s to late 30s, approximately 6 feet tall with a muscular build, struggling with and
striking Swafford. The neighbor bravely attempted to intervene but lost his grip as the attacker forced Swafford into her own car and sped away, hitting a parked vehicle as he fled.
The search for Leona Swafford ended in heartbreak a short time later when her body was discovered about three miles from her home. The Tarrant County medical examiner would later determine that the cause of death was a gunshot wound and blunt force injuries to the head, with evidence of asphyxia. Her stolen vehicle was later found abandoned at a nearby apartment complex. The senselessness of the crime was further compounded by the fact that neither her car nor any money was ultimately taken, leaving her family and investigators to grapple with the motive behind such a violent act.
In the years following the murder, the Arlington Police Department has continued to investigate, but the case remains unsolved. A composite sketch of the suspect was created based on witness descriptions and circulated publicly in the hopes of generating new leads. Despite numerous tips over the years, no arrests have been made, and the identity of Leona Swafford's killer remains a mystery. The random and brutal nature of the attack left a deep wound in the community and a void in the lives of her loved ones that has yet to be filled by justice.
