In the quiet woods of Sussex County, Virginia, a day of hunting turned to tragedy, ending the life of 61-year-old Thomas Michael Harris of Prince George, a man remembered for bringing laughter and happiness to those around him. On December 30, 2013, what was meant to be a recreational outing became the scene of a fatal shooting accident near Waverly.
Emergency services responded to a report of a hunter being shot and discovered Harris suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Thomas Michael Harris succumbed to his injuries the following day, on December 31, 2013.
An investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The incident was determined to be a hunting accident. There have been no reports of any arrests or suspects in connection with this tragic event, as the circumstances were deemed to be accidental in nature. Harris, a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired diesel mechanic from John Deere, was survived by his wife, stepchildren, and brothers.
