In the quiet town of Glade Spring, Virginia, the morning of February 25, 2014, was shattered by a brutal act of domestic violence that claimed the life of 74-year-old Nancy Griffin. A retired administrative assistant from Emory & Henry College, Nancy was a beloved member of her community. Her life, along with the lives of her daughter, Kristin Palmer, 46, and her grandson, Griffin Palmer, 17, was tragically cut short in an event that stemmed from a long history of domestic turmoil.
The
perpetrator was Kevin Dale Palmer, Kristin's husband and Griffin's father. In the early hours of that Tuesday, Kevin Palmer forced his way into the Griffin home, where his wife and son had sought refuge. Armed with two firearms, he unleashed a fatal attack on his family, shooting and killing Nancy, Kristin, and Griffin. Nancy's husband, Terry Griffin, was also shot but managed to survive the horrific ordeal. After carrying out the killings, Kevin Palmer turned a gun on himself, ending his own life.
The days leading up to the tragedy were filled with fear and attempts to seek protection. Just days prior, Kristin and her son had filed domestic abuse complaints against Kevin Palmer. They had successfully obtained emergency restraining orders, which had been extended by a court on February 24, the day before the murders. Despite these legal safeguards, Kevin Palmer, who had been arrested on assault and battery charges but was out on bond, was able to carry out his deadly plan. The investigation that followed revealed a history of abuse that had persisted for at least six years.
The community of Glade Spring and the Emory & Henry College campus were left to grapple with the profound loss. Vigils and memorial services were held to honor the memories of Nancy, Kristin, and Griffin.
