On the evening of August 9, 2014, in the 500 block of Nottingham Court in Hopewell, Virginia, tragedy struck the community. Calvin Alfonzo Brothers, a 29-year-old Black man, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. The call reporting shots fired came in at approximately 9:53 p.m. Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported Brothers to John Randolph Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Born on January 12, 1985, in Norfolk, Virginia, Calvin Brothers was the eldest son of his parents, Calvin and Jamel Brothers. He was a graduate of Hopewell High School's class of 2003, where he had been a prominent figure, serving as the co-captain of the football team and also playing basketball. Remembered as a lovable person, he was a devoted father to his children. His sudden and violent death sent ripples of grief and shock through his family and the wider Hopewell community.
In the wake of the shooting, the Hopewell Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, the case has grown cold. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Calvin Brothers, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide, leaving his family and community without closure. Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist in bringing those responsible for his death to justice.
