In the summer of 2015, a heart-wrenching incident in Roanoke, Virginia, resulted in the death of a toddler. Aryah Leigh Lipford, a 23-month-old Black female, was fatally shot on the evening of July 16, 2015. The young girl and her mother, Racheal Quesenberry, were both discovered with gunshot wounds outside a residence on Oakland Boulevard NW shortly before 9:30 p.m.
Both were transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where Aryah was pronounced dead from her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification of a suspect, Warner Lovings Hunter III, who was 26 years old at the time. Hunter had a previous relationship with Quesenberry. Authorities reported that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Hunter and Quesenberry over a car she had borrowed from him. Prosecutors stated that Quesenberry had kept the car for a week, longer than the initially agreed-upon day or two. When she returned the vehicle, an argument ensued, during which Hunter opened fire, striking both Aryah and her mother.
Following the shooting, Hunter fled the scene but was apprehended several hours later by Virginia State Police and Covington Police. He was subsequently charged with non-capital second-degree murder and malicious wounding. In a plea deal to avoid a capital murder charge, Hunter pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Aryah Lipford. In January 2016, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder. He also received an additional 38 years for the malicious wounding of Rachael Quesenberry. The case deeply affected the local community, with Aryah's family remembering her as a loving and joyful child.
