In the pre-dawn hours of a Tuesday in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 30-year-old Jerrod Montrell Brown, a Black man, was tragically cut short. On March 28, 2017, at approximately 1:59 a.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet near the intersection of Quash Street and Foley Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Brown lying in the roadway.
He had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was pronounced deceased right there on the street.
The Hampton Police Division immediately classified the case as a homicide and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the city's first killing of that year. Detectives began the arduous process of trying to identify the person or people responsible for Brown's death. His mother, Joyce Brown, received the devastating news when detectives knocked on her door later that morning, a visit that followed her unanswered calls to her son's phone after hearing a troubling voicemail. The community was left shaken, and Brown’s family, including his wife, daughter, parents, and four brothers, was plunged into mourning.
